Offline document AI · runs in your browser

Your library, carried offline.

Put your PDFs, notes and photographed pages on the turtle’s back. Ask anything about them: a small AI model on your own device answers, and points to the page it read.

  • Free
  • No account
  • Works in airplane mode after setup

01 · What it does

Ask your own documents.

Contracts, lecture notes, manuals, a printed recipe book. SHELFBACK reads what you give it and answers questions about it, without sending a single file anywhere.

Answers with page numbers

Each claim carries a number like [2]. Tap it and the exact passage opens, with the file name and page, so you can judge it yourself.

Runs on your device

The model, the search index and your files live in this browser’s storage. There is no upload, no server and no account.

Reads what you already have

PDF, Word, plain text, Markdown, saved web pages, and photos of printed pages. Text in photos is recognised on the device.

Keeps working without signal

Download once on Wi-Fi. Afterwards the app opens and answers on a plane, a boat or a mountain.

02 · How it works

Load once. Ask anywhere.

Everything heavy happens once, while you still have a connection. After that the turtle carries it.

  1. 1

    Choose a model

Pick the standard model or a lighter one for older phones. The app shows the exact download size before anything starts, and keeps it in the browser for next time.

  2. 2

    Load documents onto an island

Drop files into an island. They are split into short passages and indexed right there in the browser, with page numbers kept.

  3. 3

    Ask, then check

Ask in your own words, in English, Indonesian or most major languages. Open any numbered source to read the passage behind the answer.

No WebGPU on your device? Search mode still finds and shows the matching passages; only the written answer needs WebGPU.

03 · Islands

One island per subject.

An island is a shelf for one part of your life. Ask a single island when you want a focused answer, or the whole archipelago when you don’t remember where something is.

  • WorkContracts, policies, the 80-page onboarding PDF.
  • StudyLecture slides, papers, your own notes.
  • TravelBookings, visa rules, a guidebook you photographed.
  • HomeWarranties, manuals, the lease.

New here? The app has a sample island you can try in one tap, before downloading anything of your own.

04 · Privacy

Nothing leaves the shell.

SHELFBACK has no backend. There is no place for your documents to go.

Stays on your device

  • Your files and the text read from them
  • The search index and every question you ask
  • Answers, chat history and island names

Uses the network, once

  • Loading this site and the app files
  • Downloading the AI model you choose
  • Language data, the first time you read a photo

Test it yourself: turn on airplane mode, reload the app and ask a question. To erase everything, use “Clear everything” in the app settings.

05 · FAQ

Questions from the dock.

Which devices can run it?

Written answers need WebGPU: recent Chrome or Edge on desktop and Android, and Safari 26 on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Phones with more memory run the standard model more comfortably; the light model is there for the rest. Without WebGPU you still get Search mode.

How much can I trust an answer?

Treat it as a pointer, not a verdict. Small models make mistakes and can misread a passage. That is why every answer is tied to numbered sources: open them and check before you rely on anything important.

Where are my files stored?

In this browser’s own storage on this device (IndexedDB and the Cache API). Clearing site data, or “Clear everything” in the app, removes them. They are not synced between devices.

Can it read scanned pages?

Yes, as photos: take a picture of a printed page and the text is recognised on the device before it is indexed. Clear, flat, well-lit photos work best.

Does it cost anything?

No. There is no account, no subscription and no paid tier. The model comes from public open-weight releases.

Do I need the $SHELF token?

No. The app works the same with or without it.

06 · $SHELF

The $SHELF token.

$SHELF launches on Pons, on Robinhood Chain, on Nov 6 at 14:00 UTC. It is not a key, a subscription or a requirement: SHELFBACK stays free and offline for everyone.
